1. Why Seoraksan and Sokcho are Special
The red and yellow foliage of Seoraksan is the best gift of autumn. The colorful scenery combined with the majestic rocky peaks looks like a painting. This place offers more than just a mountain climb; it allows you to feel the wonder of nature with your whole body. As you descend from Seoraksan, the East Sea and the bustling market of Sokcho enhance your travel experience. From fresh seafood to local delicacies, is there any place better than Seoraksan in Sokcho for a satisfying trip? Whether for a day or two over the weekend, head to Seoraksan in Sokcho, Gangwon Province, for unforgettable memories and a rejuvenating time. I hope my blog post serves as a small guide for your autumn travels.
2. History and Background of Seoraksan
Seoraksan is located at the heart of the Baekdudaegan mountain range, the backbone of the Korean Peninsula, standing tall between Geumgangsan and Odaesan. The peaks and deep valleys surrounding the highest peak, Daecheongbong (1,708m), boast diverse landscapes throughout the year, with autumn foliage being particularly spectacular. Designated as a national park in 1970 and recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, its value is acknowledged worldwide. The name 'Seorak' is said to have originated because the snow-covered peaks resemble white mountains that do not melt for a long time in winter. This place, filled with countless legends and mysterious stories, is a special location where you can feel the greatness and mystery of nature simultaneously.

3. Recommended Courses (Half-day/Full-day)
Half-day Course: Enjoying the Essence of Seorak (Seoraksan Cable Car & Sinheungsa Temple)
If it's your first visit to Seoraksan or you want to enjoy the beautiful scenery without physical strain, I recommend the cable car course. By taking the cable car from Seoraksan Sogongwon to Gwongeumseong, you can comfortably admire the breathtaking views of Seorak below. Standing at the top of Gwongeumseong, the panoramic view of the majestic peaks of Outer Seorak and the East Sea is stunning. After getting off the cable car, a short hike to the surrounding area of Gwongeumseong Beacon Tower is perfect for capturing memorable photos. After descending, visit the thousand-year-old Sinheungsa Temple to find peace of mind amidst the serene beauty of the temple and the giant Tongil Daebul. This course can be fully enjoyed in about 3-4 hours.
Full-day Course: Experience the Depth of Seorak (Ulsanbawi or Biryong Falls)
If you want to experience the deeper charm of Seorak, I recommend the Ulsanbawi or Biryong Falls course.
- Ulsanbawi Course (approximately 4 hours 30 minutes ~ 5 hours round trip): Starting from Sogongwon, this course takes you past Heundeulbawi to the top of Ulsanbawi. Although there is a steep section with iron stairs, the grandeur of the massive Ulsanbawi and the surrounding scenery at the top are breathtaking enough to make you forget all the hardships. Especially in autumn, the foliage along the valleys is a sight to behold.
- Biryong Falls Course (approximately 2 hours ~ 2 hours 30 minutes round trip): This relatively gentle course starts from Sogongwon and leads to Yukdam Falls and Biryong Falls. The clear valley water and the refreshing streams of the falls soothe your tired body and mind. Walking along the foliage-lined valley path offers an unforgettable experience.
For both courses, hiking boots, sufficient water, and snacks are essential. Especially for the Ulsanbawi course, pay attention to your stamina due to the steep incline.
